Stranger Approached, Tried to Pick Up South Orange Camper

Police ask public's help finding woman.

An eight-year-old girl was approached on Monday afternoon by a stranger who said she was there to pick up the child. The girl, a camper in the Baird day camp program, was in the field adjacent to Meadowbrook Place at approximately 1 p.m., when she was approached by a white woman in her 60s, described as having curly grey hair, a medium build and about 5'4".

The camper reports the woman engaged her in conversation and said she was there to pick up the camper.

The woman was last seen walking south across the field toward the Baird Community Center.

The police department and the Baird Community Center staff are actively investigating the incident. Anyone with information regarding this matter is urged to immediately contact police.

The South Orange Police Department reminds residents it is imperative to always advise children to immediately report any suspicious individuals or incidents to a parent, a guardian or other responsible adult.
