South Orange Man Arrested on Robbery Charges

Jamal Koontz, 22, of South Orange robbed a South Orange Ave. business at gunpoint, police say.

A young South Orange man was arrested after police linked him to an armed robbery of a South Orange Ave. business, according to a police report.

Jamal Koontz, 22, of South Orange was arrested on Monday, Nov. 25 for allegedly robbing a business on Thursday, Nov. 21.

According to police, the robber entered the store around 9 p.m., pointed a dark colored revolver at the clerk and demanded money. He took an undisclosed amount of cash before running out the rear of the building.

The South Orange Detective Bureau later identified the robber as Koontz after an investigation.

A string of robberies that same week prompted South Orange Police Chief James Chelel to attend a Board of Trustees meeting to address the crimes.

“I'd like to say in general in South Orange you are safe and the police department is there for you all the time and it's important that if you see something, say something,” he said to the Board. “We have a neighborhood watch that is second to none. If you think there is something going on, give us a call, we will be there.
