South Orange Signs Stolen, One is Damaged

The "Woodside" sign is the latest threatened sign

South Orange has seen three signs taken and one damaged in recent weeks.

The bronze "Woodside" sign from Forest Road is the latest missing sign. Police report the Woodside sign, a bronze plaque attached to a large stone at the intersection of Forest Road and Wyoming Avenue, was stolen sometime before Sept. 21, when a resident noticed it missing. The origin of the plaque is unknown.

Earlier in September, two men were seen removing the street sign that marked Centre Street and South Orange Avenue. On Sept. 7, at 1:30 a.m., a resident called police to report the men left the area in a Nissan Altima.

Likewise, the stop sign at the intersection of Academy Street and Milligan Place was removed sometime before Aug. 26.

A sign was damaged in recent weeks, as well. Michael Terranova, 20, of Freehold, was arrested for disorderly conduct on Aug. 31 when he threw a glass bottle and damaged a sign on First Street.

Many street name signs along Prospect and South Orange Avenue have been characteristically bent and damaged, presumably by the same person. Early one October morning last year (the day of the snowstorm) the street sign on our block at the corner of Prospect was so bent as to have been broken off. I counted 4 additional street that morning on northern part of Prospect that were newly bent. Our taxes are high enough without needing to deal with this sort of vandalism. Our block has been without a street sign for a year now.

I Think The So. Orange Police Dept. Do A Great Job Since They Have To Respond To High Volume Of Calls Esp. On Wkends! Maybe, We Can Request More $ From Washington For More Manpower. But, As I Said, Considering This, I Do Think They Do A Great Job.
