Third Metal Item Is Reported Stolen

South Orange police urge public to report tampering, removal of objects.

For the third time in as many weeks, metal items have been the target of criminal activity.

South Orange police report a four-foot section of a metal storm drain was removed from the entrance to a Third Street parking lot on Jan. 18. According to police, this is the third such metal theft in South Orange.

Two days earlier, on Jan. 16, the manager of Modern Auto Body & Fender on Valley Street reported seeing a black 4-door SUV pull into his parking lot and removed two iron drainage covers. The driver put the covers into the car and drove east on Roland Avenue.

South Orange police request the public contact police if they see anyone tampering with or removing items from a roadway or a parking lot within the village.

The SOPD non-emergency number is (973) 763-3000.
