Beth Daugherty Is New Board of Ed Prez

Mark Gleason ended his term as President as Daugherty was put forward for nomination.

became President of the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education on Monday, May 2, at the Board's annual reorganization meeting.

Daugherty has been a member of the Board of Education for 4 years, . Daugherty has been a strong voice on the board, championing projects such as the lighting of Underhill Field and the renovation of the Columbia High School auditorium (Daugherty is Facilities Chair).

Daugherty has been a supporter of Superintendent of Schools Brian Osborne, whom she preceded by one month when she first was elected to the Board of Education. Daugherty has championed improved curriculum and teacher training as well as the goal of closing the achievement gap between white and black students. Last June, Daugherty voted to combine Levels 3 and 4 in 7th grade for English language arts, science and social studies.

Upon her election by her peers as Board President, Daugherty had these words:

"I am very honored and excited to become President of the Board of Education. I am grateful for this opportunity to lead and work with the rest of the Board and the Superintendent to continue to improve excellence and equity for all children.  

"This is a huge responsibility and I am fortunate to take on this role while Mark Gleason is still on the Board so I can benefit from his guidance. South Orange-Maplewood is a great school district with intense talent, passion and dedication exhibited by our students, parents and staff. I look forward to a great year and welcome input from all stakeholders."

Daugherty was unanimously approved by her peers.

The same meeting welcomed Board of Education member and saw the return of re-elected members and , while bidding farewell to , who chose not to seek re-election.

Gaudelli had these words of congratulations for Daugherty: "Beth will be a fine new board president as she has the vision and pragmatic sensibility to lead in a challenging context."
