South Orange residents can receive Village information via email, home and cell phone. Village Administrator Barry Lewis said last Monday at a Board of Trustees meeting that residents are "strongly encouraged" to sign up for notices, which can be done here.
While the Village has an "Emergency Subscriber List," usually known as Reverse 911, the email notifications are an additional means for residents to get updates.
Village President Alex Torpey further explains, "This would be used for those same emergencies also, as people can put their email and mobile number in, giving us more routes to get the information out. Additionally, this system could (and should) be used for important information related to a neighborhood, for example a road closing, construction, water main break or missed recycling."
While South Orange has had the capability for some time, "we have very few residents signed up in our alert system, and highly suggest people input their emails and cell phone numbers to ensure that they receive timely communication of important information," says Torpey. "People can opt out, at any time, of course, but we really encourage people to sign up all the cell phone numbers and emails in their household."
