MMS Teacher Becomes Tuscan Assistant Principal

The move was announced at the Board of Education meeting

Kevin Mason, a science teacher at Maplewood Middle School, will become the new assistant principal at Tuscan Elementary School, the board of education confirmed Monday.

Mason’s promotion follows other recent district changes, including the promotion of teacher Theodore Panayoutou as Tuscan School assistant to the principal. Previous Assistant Principal Marianne Hess moved to South Mountain School this fall after Benita Samuels became principal of Marshall School.

Mason received his Bachelor’s degree in Science from Morehouse College as well as his Master’s degree in teaching from Montclair State University. He earned his principal certification after successfully completing the NJ EXCEL program.

He has been the site supervisor for the Achieve Tutorial Program, coordinator for summer school and program manager for YouthNet’s afterschool program, as well as a youth advisory board liason and a member of the district’s Task Force on Excellence and Equity.

Introducing Mason to the board of education, Superintendent Brian Osborne said: “This is a fantastic moment when we have an up-and-coming leader stepping in to a new role to offer leadership at a greater scale within our district. Kevin Mason has proven himself to be dedicated, resourcefuland exceedingly competent in the classroom. I have been impressed with Mr. Mason ever since entering his classroom years ago, and I am very excited to recommend him for the board’s consideration.”

Principal Malikah Majeed of Tuscan School added,  “I am so excited to introduce you to Tuscan’s new assistant principal, Kevin Mason! We had a broad-based interview panel with district administrators, school administrators, teachers, and parents involved in the decision. Mr. Mason emerged as a caring, dedicated and student-centered educator, and truly a teacher of teachers. I look forward to sharing leadership with him, and to working together to grow programs that serve all of Tuscan’s students.”

Mason told the board that “leaving Newark and coming to SOMSD was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I enjoy working with students, staff, administration and parents and look forward to working with Ms. Majeed and becoming part of the Tuscan family. I am eager to learn with and from them as they help me grow professionally and contribute to fulfilling the vision of Tuscan Elementary School in helping all students to continue to grow and reach higher levels of achievement.”
