The South Orange and Maplewood Board of Education gained new members, Tuesday night, during its annual reorganization meeting.

Board of Education President Beth Daugherty and newcomers Stephanie Lawson-Muhammad and Johanna Wright were sworn into their new terms, surrounded by their families and their new colleagues.

Each member will serve a three-year term.

Daugherty was reappointed to Board President, Sandra Karriem was appointed First Vice President and Dr. Bill Gaudelli was voted Second Vice President.

Johanna Wright was the sole member to vote against the appointments, stating that, as a new member, she was not yet familiar with the Board members and could not make an informed vote as to who could best serve in the leadership roles.

Any reason Johanna Wright was not picked for the finance committee on the board? Certainly by her views in the campaign it seems she would have brought more diversity and broadened the perspective of the panel. The board president's response as to how she picked committee members seemed too cryptic to my view.
