South Mountain Elementary families came together with a shared love of reading last Wednesday, March 19th, to celebrate the third annual Big Read. After a welcome from Principal Tina Lehn, students and their families broke into small groups to discuss one of two books:Dancing Home by Alma Flor Ada and Gabriel M. Zubizarreta and The Chalk Box Kid by Clyde Robert Bulla. The students were excited to share their thoughts and questions about the books, and the adults in attendance were very impressed by the amazing insights the kids had to offer. In the words of one parent, “The Big Read is very important for ALL of us! I was struck by how a fifth grade boy who went along a bit reluctantly became actively engaged (and was only asked to participate in one question by his mother!). Having grandparents and parents sharing their experiences and adding small vignettes to the children’s conversations to weave the book into our own community was so special. We have loved all three years of this event.”
