Carter Park Beautified By SVNA

The recently developed Seton Village Neighborhood Association replaced Carter Park's trash piles with beautiful perennials.

After a rash of robberies last year in the area surrounding Seton Hall University, members of the community came together to form the Seton Village Neighborhood Association.  The group, which formed out of worry for the community, is now “about much more than crime prevention,” said Melanie Conklin, SVNA coordinator.

As their inaugural project, the SVNA held a clean-up and planting day Sunday afternoon in Carter Park.  The park, located on College Place and Irvington Avenue, is the local playground for the Seton Village Neighborhood.  In conjunction with SHU students and their group Village Liaisons, huge bags of trash were removed and a planting bed was installed, with more than 100 perennials donated by neighbors.

“We ordered some sun until 1 o’clock,” said Conklin, who added that she has plans for an art installation in the park come spring.  Conklin added that neighbors are welcome to come and plant even after today’s efforts are over.

The South Orange Department of Public Works supplied volunteers with trash bags, rakes, shovels and buckets, and Cleanway Carwash, across the street from the park, has offered to come over and wash the playground equipment.

I live in California now, but grew up on College Place. I remember walking to school and crossing Irvington Avenue with the help of officer Carter, the crossing guard. He was so nice and all the kids liked him. I also remember when the park was built. There used to be a building there that I remember that looked like some sort of barracks - not a clear memory, though. Many happy days playing in Carter Park.
