Green Recoverings, a non-profit that matches gently used bedding and other items from hotels with homeless shelters, charities and families in need, is coordinating a large donation to the Apostles’ House in Newark, a family emergency shelter.
Established by local churches such as St. George’s of Maplewood, Christ Church Short Hills, and St. Luke’s Montclair, The Apostles’ House provides comprehensive social services to homeless and at-risk families and individuals in the Newark area in an environment that encourages and enables self-sufficiency.
Maplewood resident Mary Marzano has been working with the Apostle Houses ever since 2009, when .
"The impact of our current economic environment has left our shelters in dire need," said Marzano. "I started out with bedding and towel donations, but now I am coordinating toiletries, clothes, kids’ toys, and even toilet paper, from both individuals and hotels. Any other useable items and assistance for the shelters is desperately needed, so we need to get the word out there."
For more information on making a donation, email Marzano at email@example.com.
This month, Marzano is working with Dorothy Peace, volunteer for the Apostle Houses, and Steve Staudt, manager at the Marriott hotel, to coordinate a large donation of blankets, sheets, toiletries, and towels to the shelter system.
"Necessities that we take for granted, like bedding and towels, provide comfort to the families at the Apostle Houses," said Peace. “Not only that, but we get to eliminate these items from our budget needs. Steve and his team at the Marriott are always thinking of us, and we are so grateful.”
