South Orange Rescue Squad
Drag box to select area
An all-volunteer squad established in 1952 with three ambulances to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to South Orange residents, occasionally responding as well to mutual aid calls in Maplewood, West Orange and Newark. The squad has 40 members, who are required to commit to one 12-hour shift per week. The squad is on call from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., seven days a week, and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m on the weekends. To cover the daytime shifts on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the Village contracts with Monoc. The Rescue Squad responded to approximately 1,400 calls in 2012. Non-EMT members are required to complete 250 hours of EMT training within a year of joining. The South Orange Rescue Squad is a non-profit corporation that is funded by donations from the community. One hundred percent of the donations to the squad go directly to their operation.
