An all-volunteer squad established in 1952 with three ambulances to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to South Orange residents, occasionally responding as well to mutual aid calls in Maplewood, West Orange and Newark.

The squad has 40 members, who are required to commit to one 12-hour shift per week.

The squad is on call from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., seven days a week, and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday through Sunday. To cover the daytime shifts on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the Village contracts with Atlantic Ambulance Corporation.

The Rescue Squad responded to 1,200 calls in 2008. Members are required to complete 120 hours of EMT training within a year of joining. The Rescue Squad also has a cadet program for high school students.
