• Village President
  • Douglas Newman is the Village President.
  • He was elected in May 2007.
  • He serves a four-year term.
  • He beat out four-term incumbent Bill Calabrese.
  • He holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
  • He only gets a vote when the Board of Trustees is deadlocked.

  • There are six trustees on the Board.
  • They serve four-year terms.
  • The last election was in May 2007; the next is this coming May. The seats of Stacey Jennings, Terriann Moore-Abrams and Michael Goldberg are at stake.
  • Four votes are needed to pass an ordinance; a resolution only needs a quorum.

• Village Administrator
  • The Village Administrator and Chief Financial Officer is John Gross.
  • He's a certified public manager and was appointed by the Village Board of Trustees in 1999.
  • He formerly worked for the state Department of Health and Senior Services and for the Borough of Neptune City, where he was administrator from 1994-1998.
  • He earned a BA from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 1977.

• Police Chief
  • The police chief is James Chelel.
  • He's been in the South Orange Police Department for 24 years.
  • He graduated Columbia High School in 1978.
  • He was made Director in 2003 when his post was a civilian position and then Chief in 2005.
  • He graduated from Rutgers-Newark in 1982 with a degree in political science. He got a master's in criminology in 1998 from New Jersey City University.
