POTHOLES
- Potholes on county roads (Irvington Avenue, Valley Street, South Orange Avenue and Wyoming Avenue) should be reported to the county at 973-239-3366.
- Potholes on other roads should be reported to the DPW.
- If overhanging trees on private property seem to present a hazard, call Code Enforcement at 973-378-7715, ext. 7700.
- Call DPW if your sewer backs up.
- If your sewer backs up during non-business hours (outside 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday), call the police department's non-emergency line at 973-378-7772.
- Leaf collection takes places from October to December (schedule varies each year).
- A map showing different areas on the pickup schedule is available online.
- Call 973-239-3366 for the leaf collection schedule on county roads (Irvington Avenue, Valley Street, South Orange Avenue and Wyoming Avenue).
- It's allowable to rake leaves into gutters only during the designated season for leaf collection.
- Spring-time pickups for leftover branches and leaves are scheduled annually.
- Branches must be under 4 inches in diameter and left on the strip between the sidewalk and the street.
- Leaves should be stuffed into bio-degradable paper bags and left on the same strip.
RECYCLING
- Toters can be purchased online.
- Residents and businesses are legally required to recycle.
- Blue toters are used for high-grade paper products, i.e., magazines, soft-cover books, computer paper, etc.
- It's $75 to buy one from DPW.
- Hard-cover books can be included when the covers are torn off.
- 2009 pick-up dates are Jan. 29, Feb. 26, March 26, April 30, May 28, June 25, July 30, Aug. 27, Sept. 24, Oct. 29, Nov. 25 and Dec. 30.
- Green toters are just for newspapers. The black inserts inside should be used for glass, food and beverage containers of aluminum and ferrous.
- It's $88 to buy one from DPW.
- 2009 pick-up dates in Zone 1 are Jan. 12, Feb. 17, March 16, April 13, May 18, June 15, July 13, Aug. 17, Sept. 14, Oct. 19, Nov. 16 and Dec. 14.

- Toters should be placed curbside after dark on the evening before scheduled pickups, or no later than 7 a.m. on the day itself.
- Senior citizens and disabled persons should contact the DPW for assistance with moving their toters.
- Recyclable goods can also be dropped off at the Recycling Center, 300 Walton Ave., on Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.
- Pickup for large items like appliances can be arranged with the DPW.
- People should allow 6 to 8 weeks.
- South Orange and Maplewood have a shared services agreement to handle electronics recycling eight times a year.
- Four Saturdays (March 7, June 6, Sept. 12 and Dec. 19) are designated for dropoff at the South Orange Recycling Center; another four are slated for Maplewood (Jan. 24, April 18, July 18 and Oct. 24).
- The Village has designated Big Green Boxes for battery disposal at locations including Village Hall, Baird Community Center and the Public Library.
- Valley Auto, 114 Valley St., disposes of car and truck batteries, free of charge.
WATER
