Police warn of recent rise in burglaries and thefts from cars.
The South Orange Police Department has issued a crime alert warning residents about a recent increase in burglaries and thefts from cars. According to the police, these types of crime rise in warm weather. Most of the incidents are taking place overnight, say police, and some of the suspects are believed to be using bicycles as a mode of transportation. Man identified as suspect in Maplewood incident believed to be involved in other armed robberies in area.
The Essex County Sheriff's Office posted a $5,000 cash reward on Thursday for information that leads to the arrest of two men wanted in connection with eleven armed robberies of convenience stores, liquor stores and gas stations in towns in three North Jersey counties since February 1, said Sheriff Armando Fontoura. One of the men has been identified as having robbed and shot the owner of MS&K Confectionery at 745 Prospect Street on April 1, said Fontoura. The man was also recently identified as allegedly robbing a Belleville convenience store on April 14 and being part of a two-man armed robbery at a liquor store in Linden on April 17. Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, 34, charged with killing Joseph Galfy of Clark.
Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, dubbed "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker," was arrested Thursday evening at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Philadelphia by members of the Philadelphia Police Department, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said. McGillvary has been charged with the murder of Joseph Galfy, Jr., 73, which allegedly occurred in Clark on May 12. McGillvary will be processed in Philadelphia and returned to New Jersey in the coming days. His bail was previously set at $3 million, and he will be lodged in the Union County Jail in Elizabeth, Romankow said. One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. That year, there were 193 DUI fatalities, MADD said. About 10,000 deaths nationwide a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. NORTH JERSEY -- Singer Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in prison Monday for not paying taxes on more than $2.3 million in earnings over a five year period. The eight-time Grammy winner faced up to three years in federal prison after after pleaded guilty in federal court in June 2012 to failing to file tax returns. The South Orange resident must also serve three months of home confinement. During a three hour proceeding before Federal Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo, Hill’s attorney Nathan Hochman argued that the former Fugee should receive probation with no period of incarceration or, at worst, home confinement. Lauryn Hill has reportedly paid the back taxes and penalties she owed. The South Orange resident and Fugees singer was schedule to be sentenced in Newark on Monday. Billboard.Com reports that Hill's lawyer says she has paid. Hill was scheduled for sentencing in U.S. District Court in for her failure to file tax returns on more than $1.8 million earned between 2005 and 2007. On April 22, sentencing was postponed, giving Hill until May 6 to pay off her debts. The 37-year-old singer and South Orange resident was charged and pleaded guilty in June 2012 to failing to pay taxes on $1.8 million in income earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Officials say rescue squad evaluated intoxicated concert-goers attending university's Spring Fling concert and transported to area hospitals.
Officials at Seton Hall University’s Spring Fling Concert reported 13 people were taken to area hospitals after they became intoxicated, according to a published report. Although no one was seriously injured at the event, university spokeswoman Laurie Pine told NJ.com, it is unclear if any of the concert-goers were students. The concert-goers were evaluated by the South Orange Rescue Squad prior to being transferred to East Orange General Hospital or St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, the report said. The most wanted woman in New Jersey history is now the first woman on the FBI's fugitive terrorist list. Joanne Chesimard, convicted of a murdering a state trooper in 1973, was added to the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist list Thursday on the 40-year anniversary of the trooper's death. The FBI Newark Division held a press conference Thursday to announce the addition of Chesimard's name and the collaboration between federal and state law enforcement agencies in upping the reward for information that leads to her arrest to $2 million. Chesimard is the first woman on the Most Wanted Terrorist List. South Orange police report a new mailing is harmless
The South Orange police are advising residents that an advertisement that resembles an explosive device is harmless. From the police memo: Forbes magazine has recently published and mailed out a special issue which advertises a new Wi-Fi “hot spot” mechanism. It contains a Wi-Fi access point glued into the magazine, with a battery operated power source, including wires attached. While the advertisement is completely innocuous, the physical appearance may appear to look like an explosive device. New Jersey has seen an increase in suspicious activity reporting since the Boston marathon attacks, particularly incidents of suspicious packages and bomb threats.
