SOMAtv and the Columbia Cable Network air on South Orange Cablevision Channel 19 and Maplewood Comcast Channel 35.More For South Orange FIOS subscribers, it's Channel 22.

Programming includes broadcasts of South Orange and Maplewood public meetings and Board of Ed meetings, interviews with local officials and personalities, and Columbia High School-produced news and features by the TV production classes.

Taping is done at Columbia High School. Production takes place on Tuesdays and Thursday nights.

The station manager is Tom Jeron.

SOMAtv programming includes "Nostalgia Alley," a look at South Orange/Maplewood history; "Girl Talk" with Donna Sill, a talk session with middle-school girls; "Books In Action" with Melissa Kopecky (South Orange head librarian), Jim Horton, Laura Kuemer or Larry Petraccaro; and "Meet the Artist" with Nancy Heinz-Glaser.

South Orange Symphony

The South Orange Symphony holds three to four free concerts per year at South Orange Middle School (SOMS). TheMore orchestra also performs at fundraisers. Amateur musicians are welcome but must audition for seats. The Symphony awards scholarships to student string players, providing private lessons, and is funded by patrons and advertisers.

The group has about 50 members and rehearses every Tuesday at SOMS from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. Some members are from South Orange and Maplewood, but musicians also come from as far as Pennsylvania and Jersey Shore. Robert Helmacy has been the conductor since 1972.

The group sponsors a yearly Artist Competition. Winners are awarded $500 upon performing a solo on their instrument at a regularly scheduled performance. Call 973-729-5275 for membership queries.
