Yankees Help Bring New Rival for Red Bulls

New York Yankees and Manchester City have teamed up to bring a new professional soccer team to NYC by 2015

The New York Red Bulls, who call Harrison their home, will not be the only face of professional footy in the metropolitan area for much longer. New York City is planning to kick the ball around in the MLS come the spring of 2015. Major League Soccer Commissioner Dan Garber announced the birth of the newest franchise in the MLS: the New York City Football Club. The new club will be owned by 2012 Barclay’s Premier League champions Manchester City and the 27 time World Series champion New York Yankees. “This opportunity is huge for us and huge for the city. We will work to deliver good, beautiful football to the fans in New York,” said Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano. “We are very happy and honored to have the Yankees as partners.” Yankees…

Village President, Mayor Declare "Our Lady of Sorrows Week"

South Orange and Maplewood mark the parish's 125 years.

  Village President Alex Torpey Monday night declared "Our Lady of Sorrows Week" in South Orange, and Mayor Vic DeLuca did the same on Tuesday night. The week beginning May 26 will recognize the 125th anniversary of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS).  Church celebrations culminate on Saturday, June 1 with a closing mass followed by a gala celebration at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, according to marketing chair Chuck Chambers. "We recognize that OLS has been part of this community, and a neighbor to South Orange for more than a century," said Torpey. Trustee Deborah Davis Ford shared her excitement. MSO Villagers Finish Successful Season

Girls' middle school softball team goes 6-3.

  The following was submitted by Villagers coach and parent Alex Nicholas. The 2013 Maplewood/South Orange Villagers Fast pitch girls’ Middle School softball team, which plays in the Suburban League of Essex County, just finished a very successful Spring season. During the regular season, the Villagers recorded 6 wins and 3 losses.  They had some big wins, topping Millburn 17-0 and Nutley 20-2.  The team also beat Montclair 5-2 in a tight pitching duel and suffered some competitive losses to Cedar Grove and Caldwell.  Last weekend in the single elimination playoffs, the Villagers defeated Belleville 10-7 in the quarter finals and Bloomfield 15-9 in the semifinals to advance to the Championship game against West Caldwell/Caldwell on Monday…

SO Police: Car Break-ins Spike, Use Precautions

Police warn of recent rise in burglaries and thefts from cars.

  The South Orange Police Department has issued a crime alert warning residents about a recent increase in burglaries and thefts from cars. According to the police, these types of crime rise in warm weather. Most of the incidents are taking place overnight, say police, and some of the suspects are believed to be using bicycles as a mode of transportation. Village President Lauds Weekend Events

Downtown after Sundown and GFest were "fantastic," says Alex Torpey

Crediting Lisa Hackett and the South Orange Village Center Alliance (SOVCA), Village President Alex Torpey said the weekend was "fantastic" and a great start to the season. This weekend saw the return of Downtown After Sundown. The third season kicked off with four concerts.The Frost Kings, The Baby Please, On the Hoof, and The Mother Funkers performed. Torpey also reported that GFest, one of the largest gatherings of vintage German cars on the East Coast, on Saturday, May 18 drew "hundreds of people to South Orange." New Trustees Join South Orange Government

Sheena Collum, Stephen Schnall and Walter Clarke will serve on the South Orange Board of Trustees.

Sheena Collum, Stephen Schnall and Walter Clarke were sworn in to four-year terms as trustees on Monday night at Village Hall. Before a large and enthusiastic crowd, the three winning took the oath of office, adminstered by Village President Alex Torpey, and were seated on the dais.  Maplewood's Jerry Ryan, South Orange Police Chief James Chelel, South Orange Fire Chief Jeff Markey, and former Village President Douglas Newman were in attendance.  Collum, Schnall and Clarke took the vote last Tuesday after several weeks of active campaigning. They replace Janine Bauer, Michael Goldberg, and Nancy Gould, who announced earlier this year that they would not seek re-election.
