Columbia HS Teacher, Artist Celebrates Tony Smith

Kate Dodd's new site-specific art lines Mead Street, circles the South Orange Duck Pond

Nearly 100 plastic bottles hang from street signs and lamp posts, lining Mead Street and circling the Duck Pond in South Orange. The project is Kate Dodd's "birthday gift" to artist and South Orange native Tony Smith. Dodd, an artist, South Orange resident, and Columbia High School art teacher, exhibited 100 "vitrines," or bottles, each containing information or images that tell the story of how Smith's Tau sculpture came to be in South Orange. Tau and Tony Smith are celebrated this fall in South Orange; the artist would have turned 100 in September. The Village of South Orange and the Lennie Pierro Memorial Arts Foundation mark the occasion with a day-long event, a Pierro gallery show until the end of October, and Closing Celebration/…

Meet the Artist Sybil Archibald

Sybil Archibald participates in the SOMA Artists Tour on Sunday

Over the past eight years, the phrase “the first Sunday in June” has become synonymous with the visual arts in South Orange and Maplewood. This is the day reserved for the popular South Orange Maplewood Artists Studio Tour. I love Sybil's work. St Francis and Hildegard of Bingen are favourites. I love that her art explores spirituality. I have found that meditating on her work deepens my own spiritual journey and encourages my own creative outpourings. Asta   more ›

Come the February thaw, I saw these same buried Christmas trees poking out of the drifted snow. I said to SK, 'Oh! look! Zombie Christmas Trees!' and something clicked." Find out what happens to four sixth graders in a Maplewood neighborhood who pursue the mystery of who or what is stealing Christmas tree decorations from garages and storage sheds all over Maplewood. When they discover discarded …
