Springfield Avenue Celebrates Black History Month

February brings full roster of events, including iPad2 Giveaway

  The Springfield Avenue Partnership invites community residents and visitors to celebrate Black History Month on the Avenue by participating in fun and educational activities and events being presented by local business owners for children, families and adults. The Partnership provided a grant of $100 as a supporting sponsor to any district business or community institution in the special improvement district that scheduled an event as part of the Black History Month celebration.  The Partnership is also encouraging people to enter a Black History Month promotion for a chance to win an IPad2 donated by Every L'il Thing Florist (1573 Springfield Avenue) and Inc Pics (1608 Springfield Avenue). Gallery 1978 Presents Black History Month Exhibit

The work of Emma Amos is highlighted; exhibit begins Feb. 2

  The following information is from 1978 Arts Center. Gallery 1978 on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood kicks off its 11th Annual Black History Month Exhibit on Saturday, Feb. 2, featuring the work of acclaimed artist Emma Amos. The exhibit runs through March 24; an opening reception will be held Sunday, Feb. 10 from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Amos is an internationally renowned artist whose work is included in the collections of MOMA, NJ State Museum and the Newark Museum. Her art combines printmaking and textiles. Some of her paintings are bordered with African fabrics and her own quilting or weavings and have been seen as a connecting link to European tapestries and the African diaspora. 1978 Arts Center Celebrates Black History Month in Style

Celebrating Black History Month with the art of Tesfaye Tessema and the words of Dr. Rahidah Ismaili Abubaker.

1978 Arts Center on Springfield Avenue is celebrating Black History Month in style with the art of Tesfaye Tessema and the words of Dr. Rahidah Ismaili Abubaker. The art show runs from Jan. 15 to Feb. 26, with the gallery open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be an exhibit-related family activity basket in the gallery during viewing hours.
