St Joseph’s CYO basketball opened the 2012-2013 season with 11 teams competing in the Union County CYO Youth Basketball League. St. Joseph’s CYO s made up of students in grades 2 to 12 who live in the Maplewood, South Orange and the surrounding area. The St. Joseph’s Celtics Varsity 8th-graders rode a stifling second-half defense and the hot shooting of Zachary Chmiel to a 27-23 victory over St. Helen’s of Westfield in the team’s Union County CYO 2012-13 opener. Chmiel scored 13 points, thanks to a variety of assists on the fast break from point guard C.J. Carey. Carey also found Thomas Fetner, who patrolled the paint for eight points. JV, 4th grade and 3rd grade boys of St. Joseph's CYO continue their winning ways.
The St. Joseph Celtics JV boys maintained their winning ways this past weekend. The Team faced a tough opponent in St Helens from Westfield. St Helen's came out of the gate red hot. Hitting three 3-point baskets and held an 8 point commanding lead at halftime. This was the first time this season the JV boys trailed at halftime. With their back up against the wall (lose and go home), the boys ripped off 18 unanswered points to start the 3rd quarter and took control of the game. At halftime, the coaches designed a play to exploit a mismatch on defense. The star of the game was Darius Plummer who capitalized on this mismatch and scored 14 points in the 2nd half. Final season games this weekend and then on to the playoffs!
The Celtics Varsity boys lost 36-32 to Holy Trinity of Westfield, in a very close game this past weekend, closer than the score indicated. The team was short handed with only six players but played a good game despite early foul trouble for the Celtics’ center Scotty Harvey, who eventually fouled out early in the 4th quarter. Paul Dougherty and Michael Muench led the team’s offense against a very tough team. Dougherty’s aggressive offensive play helped to keep the team within striking distance by adding 8 points while forward Tajeer Robinson added a game high 16 points. Michael Robertson and Scotty Harvey controlled the boards but aggressive defense (Jonathan St Jean had 4 steals) hurt the team in the end. Injuries have set the Celtics …

The St. Joseph’s Celtics basketball teams had a full schedule of games this past weekend playing some stiff competition but still brought home five wins.
The Celtics JV 6th grade girls continued their winning ways by defeating St. Helen of Westfield this past Sunday 23-12. They were led by a balanced scoring attack and aggressive defense, allowing the team to improve its record to 6-3. They have three remaining games where they will look to improve their position for the playoffs. The Celtics JV 5th grade girls had another nail-biter weekend of basketball games. The girls split the games with a Saturday win over Our Lady of Peace, New Providence (15-14) and a Sunday loss against St. Teresa of Summit (11-10).
