City Ice Rink Gets Half-Million-Dollar Facelift

Members of the New Jersey Devils appear to help promote youth hockey in Newark

Newark has bred standouts in sports including boxing, baseball, track and field, basketball, football and soccer. A Brick City native has even made his mark in fencing, competing in several Olympics. But hockey? Given the city’s commitment to the sport in recent years, the possibility of a Newarker one day making it to the NHL could be more likely than it’s ever been. “There’s not a huge hockey following in urban areas in general. But once we get the kids out there, they try it and they fall in love,” said Dennis Ruppe, the co-director the nonprofit Hockey in Newark program. “Then it becomes word-of-mouth.” Ruppe, whose group promotes the sport among city youth, was one of hundreds of people at the Ironbound Recreation Center on Rome …

Ole! Spain Wins on Penalties, Advances to Euro 2012 Finals

Fans in Newark's Ironbound party it up after game

Despite a heartbreaking loss for Portugal, Spain's penalty shootout victory Wednesday in the Euro 2012 semifinals was still a cause for celebration in Newark's Ironbound community. Fans from both sides of the Peninsular War poured onto Ferry Street shortly after Spain ousted Portugal, 4-2, in penalty kicks following 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime. And, though it was a community divided going into Wednesday's game, huge Spain and Portugal flags waved in unison during a blowout bash at Iberia. "It feels really great to see Spain win because I'm of Puerto Rican descent," said Will Caballero, who caught the game at Manu's Tapas Bar and Sushi Lounge. Spain, the reigning World Cup and Euro champs, are vying to become the …

Portugal vs. Spain in Euro 2012 Semis: Who Will Win?

Neighboring countries face off Wednesday in European Championship semifinals

An all-Iberian matchup is heating up with just days to go until Spain and Portugal meet in the European Championship semifinals. Coming off an explosive 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic last week, Portugal will have to stave off defending World Cup and Euro champion Spain for a spot in the Euro 2012 finals. The two teams play Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine. No doubt the rivalry between the neighboring countries is one with which Newarkers are familiar. The classic showdown is more than 90 years old, with Spain maintaining its dominance in 37 head-to-head matches against Portugal, when its national football team first debuted, according to Union des Associations Européennes de Football (UEFA). Portugal will likely be looking for …

Resurgence of Newark's Portugal Day Festival This Weekend

Three-day festival to shed image of rowdy, booze-filled event with good, clean fun

The Portugal Day Festival in Newark is getting back to its roots this year, according to organizers who promise gone are the days of the wild booze-fest for which it's been previously known. The world-renowned festival, which kicks off today on Ferry Street in the city's Ironbound, has undergone a metamorphosis - and change in organizers - and is now spread across a three-day family friendly celebration filled with cultural music, food and kids activities. The fest runs from noon until 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. "We're trying to change the way people perceive the whole affair," said Fernando Grilo, president of União de Clubes Luso-Americanos de NJ (UCLANJ). Founded in 1980 by Bernardino Coutinho, and long-organized by his …

Whitney Houston's Body Arrives in Newark

Mourners hold candlelight vigil, sing along to Houston's hit songs outside funeral home

Whitney Houston is finally home. The singer's body was returned to her native Newark shortly before midnight Monday amid a throng of screaming fans who waited hours for the hearse to arrive at Whigham Funeral Home. Surrounded by heavy police presence, a gold-colored car with blacked out windows dropped off Houston's casket, concealed by a white tent, at a back entrance off Shipman Street. Houston's mother, Cissy, and other family members were seen filing into the funeral home about 15 minutes before the hearse arrived. Houston, who was found dead at age 48 inside a Beverly Hills hotel room Saturday, was flown from California to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey for the wake and public memorial that may be held in Newark later this week.
