Tennis Struggles Continue

Columbia boys fall to 1-5 following road loss to Livingston.

The tough road in the Super Essex American Division continued for the Columbia boys tennis team Friday afternoon, being blanked in Livingston 5-0, by the Lancer boys. "There's a lot of really good teams," said Cougar head coach Tom Fraioli. "It's one of the most competitive conferences in the state." All seven Columbia starters combined to win 19 out of 79 games played en route to the loss. At first singles, Columbia's Dylan French was bested by Thomas Caputo 6-1, 6-3. Livingston's second starter, Brandon Goldstein, had the day's most impressive performance, shutting out Adam Richardson, 6-0, 6-0. "We're very fortunate this year to have two very good players at the top of the lineup," said Livingston head coach Elliot Lovi. After losing …

Columbia Tennis Has Tough Road Ahead

Cougars go 6-14 overall but were winless in their SEC American Division.

The Columbia girls tennis team took a bit of a beating this season in the newly formed Super Essex Conference American Division. But while many are crying foul about the new divisions and conferences, Columbia head coach Tom Fraioli is happy about playing against elevated competition, even if it means losing. “We were 0-12 in the conference. From a win-loss perspective, it was disappointing,” Fraioli said. “But we enjoyed playing the competition we have. I think our program is stronger for it. Our girls prefer to play in our division and play stiffer competition.” Outside of the division, the girls actually enjoyed a successful season, going 6-2 in non-conference games. That, plus their strength of schedule playing in the best division in …

Alex Livingston Shines, but Cougar Tennis Falls

Newark Academy defeats the Columbia girls tennis team, 4-1.

With seven matches left to play and their playoff chances already endangered after a 4-1 loss to Watchung Hills in the first round on Tuesday, the Columbia girls tennis team did not get a break on Wednesday either. The always difficult Newark Academy girls came to town to play at South Orange Middle School and handed the Red and Black girls a convincing 4-1 loss. Despite the overall record of the girls falling to 5-11, Columbia No. 1 singles player Alex Livingston has continued her stellar play this season, all while battling a sore shoulder. If it was hurting during the match, it could hardly be noticed on Wednesday. Livingston breezed past Molly Alter in straight sets, dropping just a single game. Her match was over in less than an hour…

Cougars Eliminated in First Round of ECT

Columbia girls tennis falls to Montclair, 4-1.

The Columbia girls tennis team was eliminated this afternoon from the Essex County Tennis Tournament, held at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center in Newark's Branch Brook Park. The unseeded Cougars lost 4-1 to the favored Montclair Mounties. The Cougar’s lone win came from first singles star Alex Livingston, who improved to 6-1 overall this season, defeating Sophie Rasmussen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. “She had a sore shoulder. I was happy to see her get through the match, and to win the way she did,” said Columbia Head Coach Tom Fraioli. At second singles, Julia Lester Taylor was up a game on Catherine Hopkins in the opening set at 4-3, but then dropped the next nine games to fall in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Columbia’s Danielle Lee lost to …

Columbia Boys Tennis Finds Consolation, Wins 2nd Tournament Match

Cougars win one out of two matches at the Essex County Tournament.

After a lopsided 4-1 loss to Montclair Kimberley Academy in the opening round of the Essex County Tournament, the Columbia boys found consolation, easily dispatching the Glen Ridge Ridgers, 5-0, on Thursday morning at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center in Newark. The win propels them into a consolation bracket, where they will face either West Orange or Irvington on Saturday morning. After being admittedly over-matched the MKA Cougars, the Black and Red boys bounced back with authority against a Ridger team which didn’t seem to provide much of a challenge. Both teams forgot to bring their score cards to the game, making spectators have to guess at the score—a near-impossible task. But no one needed score cards during Columbia’s consolation …
