SOM Community Coalition on Race updates Maplewood Township Committee on its activities.
The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race (CCR) gave a presentation on its activities and future plans at Tuesday's Maplewood Township Committee. The CCR is producing a virtual video tour to market the two towns, which will partially replace the actual tours it has conducted since it its founding in 1997, said program director Audrey Rowe. She said the demand for the tours has dropped over the years as homebuyers have turned to online house hunting. The organization is launching a home improvement loan program to provide funds to neighborhoods with higher rates of ordinance violations, to assist residents with making improvements to their properties, Rowe said. The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race (CCR) will sponsor a special theater performance for children, as part of its "Integration through the Arts" program, at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) on Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. A $5 donation is recommended. This year’s program includes a theater production for children using two well-known children’s books. These productions are live theater performances by local professionals that use stories to get kids to think about fairness and discrimination, to learn to not fear people who are different, and to work together to solve problems. William “Chip” Madsen of Maplewood passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2013 after a relentless fight with metastasized melanoma cancer. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Rd., Maplewood, on Sat, January 26th at 11:00 AM. Chip never did anything without energy, commitment and passion. He married his college sweetheart and remained passionately in love with her until the end. He was a classically trained musician who was a professional opera singer in Germany and the United States for several years. Community Coalition on Race co-hosted event at Morrow Church.
The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race, along with First Baptist Church of South Orange and Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, co-hosted an interfaith observance and Volunteer Fair on Jan. 21 at Morrow Church in Maplewood. The event featured guest speaker Junius Williams, Director of the Abbott Leadership Institute at Rutgers, Newark and music from a jazz ensemble and the combined choirs of local churches. A Volunteer Fair and reception followed the observance.

For the 11th year, the Community Coalition on Race is hosting a Preschool Open House for South Orange, Maplewood and neighboring parents. The open house, whice takes place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Columbia High School, will feature representatives from more than 15 preschool and child-care agencies who will be available to answer questions. The event opens with a brief presentation from 7 to 7:30 p.m. with tips on how to select a preschool/childcare service that supports kindergarten readiness given by Tina Lehn, principal of South Mountain Elementary School in South Orange.

We Remember Congressman Donald Payne We are saddened to hear of the death of Congressman Payne. Raised in Newark and a graduate of Seton Hall University, he was the first African American to represent New Jersey in Congress. He served as a Member of the House of Representatives from New Jersey’s 10th District since 1989, was an ardent spokesman for education, served as Chairman of the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, and worked on behalf of human rights issues throughout the world. We last saw Congressman Payne at our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance this past January. He joined the Coalition and our community members nearly every year for this event. CCR updates members on the work done this past year and going forward.
The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race (CCR) gave their annual Report to the Community on Wednesday evening at Maplewood Memorial Library. The event is used as a forum for the various committees in the organization to update residents on the workings of CCR in the past year and for the future. “We call it the ‘Report to the Community,’ but I look at it more as a shareholders meeting,” said CCR Chairman Chip Madsen. “Members of the community can learn more about the return on their investment…This organization was birthed by the community, works for the community and has responsibility to the community.” The Coalition’s executive director, Nancy Gagnier, opened the report by giving a brief history of the organization. …

the last 30 years have been wasted by implementing plans that sound good instead of those that work. Another mistake- looking to provide funds to homes in areas of ordinance violations instead of working to reduce taxes on those areas that are not.
