Booker Releases Emails On $100 Million Donation to Newark Schools

Newark officials released 36 emails about the $100 million donation Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made in 2010 to city schools.

After Newark officials were order to release emails about the $100-million donation Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made to the city’s schools in 2010, they showed it never happened. The emails revealed the donation was dismissed by one of Mayor Cory Booker's top aides as too small, according to NJ.com. However the emails also showed Newark philanthropist Ray Chambers was in favor of it. “It is unfortunate that it took a lawsuit and ruling from the judge to force the City of Newark to turn over public documents," the American Civil Liberties Union Legal Director, Ed Barocas, said. "We and our clients will now review the documents. And if there are no bombshells in these emails, the public has a right to ask why the city was so adamant in …

I have first hand experience with a hand full of so called "good" nursing homes. They offer low pay to workers and most of these so called nurses aids could care less about the elderly and do as little as possible on the job. It's almost impossible to find one (NA) born in the USA because of low wages and type of work at most nursing homes. Nursing home owners are in it for the money, its just …   more ›

SOMS Protests Demonstrate Power of Social Media

Students use online resources to communicate and demonstrate

Adults who bemoan the emerging organizational skills typical of middle school students take note: the eighth graders who have demonstrated at South Orange Middle School (SOMS) in recent weeks have used social media to organize their protests. Shortly after news spread around South Orange Middle School that two eighth grade Social Studies teachers, Steven Cohen and Kathleen McKort, were to be denied tenure, students shared the news with Columbia High School students via email. Many of those students, who had the teachers while they were at SOMS, spread the news further and joined a newly-established "closed" Facebook group. Several of the students credit the Facebook group with sharing the information. "I learned about Mr. Cohen and Ms. …

POLL: Is Facebook Really Worth All Those Billions?

It became a publicly-traded company this week and is making billions for its shareholders.

From its humble beginnings as an idea in a Harvard dorm room, to a social media site with an estimated 900 million users worldwide - Facebook has become a huge part of our popular culture. Privately held since 2004, Facebook became a publicly-traded company this week. That means all of its shares will be listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange and sold to the public, though some investors criticized that it was hard to get their hands on the stock. Once trading began, Facebook sold 421 million shares at $38 each and raised an estimated $16 billion in one day, setting records for valuation and volume of first-day trading. Friday's trading set a record for the number of shares sold, 567 million. The company's total valuation is now estimated at $…

Can an Employer Force You to Reveal Your Facebook Password?

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.

Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett refused and left the interview, according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …
