Documentary aims to end sexism in media; will be at Maplewood Theater May 21.
HK Project will host a local screening of Miss Representation on May 21 at the Maplewood Theater. Tickets can be purchased on the HK Project website $10.00 (www.hkproject.com, donations button) at the door or sent to HK Project (Miss Representation 515 Valley Street Suite 130 Maplewood NJ 07040). After the screening, there will be community discussion led by Tammy Dandino. Miss Representation first premiered in the documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival where it caught the eye of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Event will raise money to help send a talented local student to college.
HK Project will host a Valentine's Day fundraiser to support its Scholarship Fund on Friday, Feb. 22 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Maplewood Tennis Club ("The Little Club"). This is the first year that HK has hosted a fundraiser solely for the scholarship program. "The program is a very important part of HK and we would really like the community's support," said Executive Director Amy Jo Curran. The evening will include music by local band 3rd Gear, appetizers and desserts and drinks (a cash bar). HK Project Scholarship Program awards a high school senior, who lives in Maplewood or South Orange, a $5,000 scholarship to be used for an undergraduate degree at the college of his or her choice. Family of Cassandra Duke '11 need help to afford her burial.
HK Project is coordinating a fundraising drive to help the family of a recently deceased Columbia High School alumna to bury their granddaughter. Cassandra Duke, 20 years old, passed away on January 23 from complications of the flu and pneumonia. After her parents died (her mother passed away just six weeks after she was born), Cassandra was raised by her grandmother, Carolyn. Raised in Maplewood, Cassandra went to Seth Boyden Elementary School and Maplewood Middle School. As a child, she studied dance at the Burgdorff Center and was a pee-wee cheerleader. She graduated from CHS in 2011. Her family has held a small family service at the Chapels of Eden Funeral Home in East Orange, but are unable to complete the funeral arrangements. HK …

Since shortly after Superstorm Sandy swept through the area, HK Project and friends swept into action, as they often do in a crisis that affects the South Orange and Maplewood community. HK initiated the HK Project Hurricane Sandy Relief Donation Center, located at the Maplewood Woman’s Club (60 Woodland Ave., Maplewood), to collect donations of cleaning supplies, baby supplies, toiletries and other items that they will distribute to the Red Cross and local shelters. The drive continues this week, and HK is seeking both volunteers to work at the donation center, and donations for the "HK Cares Package" (see below for details). Ryan's Hope was a true community event.
On Saturday, HK Project and other friends hosted "Ryan's Hope," a benefit to help the family of Ryan Burbank, a young Maplewood man paralyzed in a pool accident this summer. The event raised money to assist the Burbank family with the purchase of a wheelchair van and alterations to their home. Earlier this summer, 18-year-old Ryan Burbank -- a Maplewood resident and son of the township's Director of Public Works, Eric Burbank -- broke his C5 vertebrae in a pool accident, paralyzing him from the chest down. In September, Ryan returned home after a two-month stay at the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in West Orange. Tickets are still available for HK Project's First Annual Gala on Saturday, honoring community members who make our two towns a better place to live.
The HK Project -- formerly known as the HK Community Fund -- will launch its new name and logo at the first annual HK Project Celebration on Saturday, October 27 from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m at the Woman's Club in Maplewood. The non-profit organization, which serves the communities of Maplewood and South Orange, will honor five local residents who make a difference: Guests can dance to the music of Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra, and Tori Erstwhile & The Montys. The non-profit changes its name, sharpens its focus on community engagement.
The Maplewood and South Orange non-profit formerly known as the HK Community Fund has officially changed its name to the HK Project (HKP), effective today, October 1. The organization was founded in 2009 by Maplewood resident Thomas E. Kerns to encourage residents to become involved in their community through a wide variety of projects and opportunities. "When you love your community you have a sense of belonging," said HKP executive director Amy Jo Curran.
