MLK's Legacy

Library to host MLK program with open mic on Thursday

 The South Orange Public Library will present Youth Reflections on the Legacy of MLK on Thursday. Amir Billups, a former SOPL page and Columbia High School Graduate, who started the MLK program as a high school student several years ago, returns as a history teacher in Newark with a presentation and an open mic session for those who have songs, poetry or prose inspired by slain civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Specifically what I want to do is take the audience back to the era of the ‘60s and the last few years of MLK’s life and focus on some of this messages beyond the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech,” Billups said. “I want to take a look at some of his commentary on the direction of the country at the time and open it up for …

South Orange Civic Organization Celebrates Dr. King

Local residents honored.

On Sunday afternoon, the South Orange Civic Organization held their 41st annual Celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King at South Orange Middle School to honor this year's Beloved Community Award recipients. This year's awards went to Alfred Bundy of South Orange and Margaret Prentice of Maplewood. Alfred Bundy owns Bundy Productions and produces and hosts "Meet the Leaders" for Cablevsion. Bundy received the award for his community volunteer work in education, particularly with urban schools. Prentice, a partner at Regent Atlantic Capital, was recognized for her volunteer work with Morrow Memorial Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity. The event's keynote speaker was Dr. Edythe M. Civic Organization's MLK program is Sunday; meanwhile snow removal continues and there's more coming

The South Orange Civic Association holds its 41st annual MLK program this Sunday with Dr. Edythe M. Abdullah, South Orange resident and Essex County College president, speaking  on “Education, Equity and Expectations.” The event honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is  co-sponsored by the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race and begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan, 9, at South Orange Middle School at 70 Ridgewood Road. In addition to Abdullah’s speech, two “Beloved Community” awards also will be given to Alfred Bundy of Orange, founder and president of Bundy Productions, and host of Cablevision’s “Meet the Leaders,” and Margaret Prentice of Maplewood, a partner in the wealth management firm, RegentAtlantic …
