Booker Mulling Senate Run, Won't Challenge Christie

Speculation about Newark mayor's plans swirled for months

Newark Mayor Cory Booker ended months of speculation Thursday when he announced that he was considering a run for US Senate. “[ I ] will complete my full second term as mayor. As for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for The United States Senate in 2014,” Booker said in a statement released shortly before noon. Political observers in the state and beyond have speculated whether Booker, 43, a Rhodes scholar and Bergen County native, would run for governor against Chris Christie in 2013 or seek the Senate seat now held by Booker’s fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg. Lautenberg, at 88 the Senate’s oldest member, has not announced any plans to step down when his term expires in 2014. In his statement, Booker’s …

Dan: - Unfortunately Newark has had some extremely bad mayors in the last half a century. The former mayors had a tendency to end up in jail. Comparing Corey Booker to Sharp James, Kenneth Gibson, Huge Adinizo, of Ralph Viliani is not a high bar for comparison. I don't see great management of Newark’s fiscal affairs, I don't see great improvement in police protection, fire protection, sanitation…   more ›

City Ice Rink Gets Half-Million-Dollar Facelift

Members of the New Jersey Devils appear to help promote youth hockey in Newark

Newark has bred standouts in sports including boxing, baseball, track and field, basketball, football and soccer. A Brick City native has even made his mark in fencing, competing in several Olympics. But hockey? Given the city’s commitment to the sport in recent years, the possibility of a Newarker one day making it to the NHL could be more likely than it’s ever been. “There’s not a huge hockey following in urban areas in general. But once we get the kids out there, they try it and they fall in love,” said Dennis Ruppe, the co-director the nonprofit Hockey in Newark program. “Then it becomes word-of-mouth.” Ruppe, whose group promotes the sport among city youth, was one of hundreds of people at the Ironbound Recreation Center on Rome …

One-stop center in Newark has information on assistance for homeowners, small business owners

The FEMA Disaster Recover Center opened its doors Monday to assist those still dealing with the mess left behind by Super Storm Sandy. Located at the Willing Heart Community Care Center (555 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Newark), the center is a one-stop shop for all Sandy and nor'easter Athena recovery resources. Residents can apply for disaster and recovery grants on site, as well as obtain information on things like homeowner mitigation, disaster unemployment and low-interest disaster loans for small businesses. "We want to make certain all those who sustained losses or damages from the recent storms understand exactly what they have to do in order to determine if they're eligible for aid – and that they receive that aid," said …

Cory Booker Fires up Crowd at DNC

In short speech, Newark mayor hits on themes of fairness, restoring prosperity.

(Please see our video of an analysis of the speech filmed immediately afterwards.) Newark Mayor Cory Booker gave a brief but rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, touching on topics that included economic inequality, education and breaks for small business. His words brought the audience to its feet.  “This is our American mission. These are the dreams of our fathers and our mothers,” Booker told the crowd gathered in Charlotte, N.C. for day one of the convention. The convention ends Thursday when President Barack Obama formally accepts the nomination.  Booker, the only member of the New Jersey delegation tasked with giving a major speech at the convention, seemed in fine form despite suffering from a “bum ankle” he…

Democratic Party Supports Same-Sex Marriage

Platform committee, co-chaired by Newark Mayor Cory Booker, backs issue for first time

The national Democratic party's platform committee, co-chaired by Newark Mayor Cory Booker, voted Saturday to endorse same-sex marriage for the first time. In a meeting in Detroit this weekend, the committee also called for the repeal of the 1996 law that recognizes marriage as between a man and woman, saying that it supports the "movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples," the Associated Press reported. Booker told Bloomberg Businessweek that while the committee's action to endorse same-sex marriage was "very significant," the top issue in the presidential campaign would be the economy. "At the end of the day, it'll maybe repel some and attract others to be more engaged," Booker told the Associated Press. "This …
