Newark Police Up Security in Wake of Boston Marathon Bombing

DeMaio: Measures are precautionary, no specific threat received in Newark

Newark police announced additional security measures in response to the bombing of the Boston Marathon Monday, but added that the measures were strictly a precaution and not in response to a specific threat.  “The Newark Police Department has not received any information that would indicate any issues of concern as it relates to the city of Newark,” Police Director Samuel DeMaio said in a statement. “However, in response to this incident we have assumed a proactive posture and taken some precautionary measures.” Two bombs went off near the finish line of the annual race Monday afternoon, killing two and wounding scores more, CNN reported. Police Search for Missing Newark Girl

Iynasha Williams, 12, last seen Sunday at 9:45 p.m. at her South Orange Avenue apartment

The search is on for a missing 12-year-old girl with bipolar disorder, last seen in Newark's West Ward, according to reports. Iynasha Williams, who ran away Sunday night from her home in Newark, has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old, NJ.com reported. She was last seen at around 9:45 p.m. at her home on South Orange Avenue wearing a yellow pajama top, pajama bottoms with writing on the legs and black high-top sneakers. She reportedly lives at Harmony House with her mother on South Orange and Littleton Avenues, a transitional housing program for the homeless. Two Dead in Shootings Hours Apart

East Orange woman, local man are victims of daytime violence Tuesday

An East Orange woman is dead after being shot Tuesday afternoon in Newark's South Ward, authorities said. Another man was shot and killed just hours later. Sabrina Hall, 42, was shot around 2 p.m. on the 700 block of Bergen Street near West Runyon Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Witnesses claimed the woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a car when the shooting occurred. Hall was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made and an investigation by ECPO's Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and Newark Police Department is active and ongoing. Authorities did not comment on a possible motive. Whitney Houston Celebrated in Rousing Funeral Service

Newark's own, singer Whitney Houston, was welcomed home to the church where she began her singing career Saturday, in a rousing gospel-flavored funeral service before an audience of family, friends and celebrities. "Whitney, today is your day," the Rev. Joe A. Carter, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, said in beginning the service. A powerful choir of more than 100 singers, backed by a band that included drums and bass and horns, provided an emotional backdrop to a procession of singers, most of them from the world of gospel music.
