South Orange Hopes for Snow...a Snow Day, That Is

South Orange may see snow on Friday, but a snow day???

Weather forecasts suggest that school will be in session on Friday, but not if local hopefuls have their way. Many school kids are taking action the best ways they know how to ensure Friday is the first snow day of the year.  "Pajamas inside out and backwards," says eighth grader Sophia. "It works every time, pretty much." Several of her buddies agreed, but hers isn't the only popular ritual designed to make the snow fall fast and heavily.  Sixth graders Josh and Kevin suggest "flushing ice cubes" does the trick. "I don't know why," admits Kevin. "It's just one of those weird things." Freshman Nicole sleeps with a spoon under her pillow. Other cutlery won't work, she says. "It has to be a spoon. The bigger the spoon, the more snow." Spoons…

Scenes from a Neighborhood

More snow means more shoveling, but more fun and beautiful sights, too

Another snow day. Newark Liberty International Airport reported 18.9 inches and weather forecasters say this first month or so of winter has been the snowiest in 62 years. While there’s talk of snow fatigue – it’s hard to think of shoveling again and even some of the kids are getting a little bored with sledding by now -- there still remains such beauty and peacefulness in a foot or two of freshly fallen snow. Did you get a chance to see the sunrise, which briefly turned the snow shades of pink and orange? Thankfully, Craig Curtis, who happens to be a professional photographer and my neighbor on the Hart Drive/Harmon Road circle, was awake and captured that light digitally. “The sunrise was so pretty-- for about five minutes when …

Just Another Winter Wonderland

Got some snowy day pictures you want to share? Upload them here

The big news last night, of course, was the snow. Kids in the crowd at the South Orange girls basketball game cheered as loudly, if not more so, for the news of a snow day that came via text during the game than when their team scored. Public works crews had their jobs cut out for them overnight. Within an hour and a half of the beginning of the snowfall, some cars, had trouble getting traction and getting up South Orange Avenue. By 11:15 p.m., plows were rumbling up and down the Avenue and traffic was moving better. But the snow kept coming and so did the plows. This morning's sun made the snow sparkle and the icicles drip. Early morning sledders did their best to flatten the fluffy stuff to make for faster sledding later today. Some …

SOMS Community Looks Forward to Snow Day

With a snow day just made official for the South Orange-Maplewood school district, local middle school students are eagerly anticipating snow.

Middle school students had visions of a snow day dancing in their heads at school on Tuesday. "I really want to go sledding at Flood's Hill," said Jasmine, a sixth grader, verbalizing the thoughts of many classmates. Jasmine, in the majority of the SOMS student population, was hoping for a snow day on Wednesday, and her wish was granted. At 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, homes in the district received a robo-call, announcing the closure of schools. Nearby districts ranging from Millburn to Livingston to Newark to New York City had announced closures earlier in the day. Many middle schoolers were planning to go sledding in their backyards and at Flood's Hill, while others wanted to visit an indoor snow park and go snowboarding. Other students were …
