South Orange Centenarian Visits Montclair Art Museum

A South Orange resident visited Montclair's museum this week.

An 1913 exhibit now at the Montclair Art Museum recently received a visit from a South Orange resident who was born around the time of its original opening.  Ethel Rosenfeld was born in New York City on Feb. 20, 1913, just three days after the International Exhibition of Modern Art, better known as the Armory Show, opened at the 69th Regiment Armory Building.  That same exhibit is now at the Montclair Art Museum, titled The New Spirit: American Art in the Armory Show, 1913. She visited the Montclair Art Museum this week with her daughter and met with Chief Curator Gail Stavitsky. The museum presented Rosenfeld with a commemorative 100th birthday present.

Visions for Vacancies: What Should Church St. and W. South Orange Ave. Become?

South Orange: What would you like to see in the most westbound retail spot in town?

We know South Orange Patch readers have strong opinions about what businesses should move into town. So here's your chance. In an occasional column, we present a vacant space and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Let's call this a digital spin on community planning -- Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table. Forget any zoning rules and regulations, for now. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? At the corner of Church Street and West South Orange Avenue stands a group of buildings and a vacant lot. Believe it or not, this area was once the hub of the Church Street neighborhood. Records date from 1930 until …

It hasn't moved forward because the owner can't raise the necessary capital. The owner is Saiyd Nagim. He is a well-known to the Village. I believe he owns 35 properties in South Orange. All undeveloped or ill-maintained. He's a property hoarder, in well over his head. Good luck getting this guy to move on anything.   more ›

Most Dangerous Intersection in South Orange?

[POLL] Let Patch know which roads you think are the most dangerous in the Village

Although winter and its slippery roads will soon be -- we hope -- in our rear-view mirrors, some roads are always a little bit more dangerous no matter what the season. Because the town is densely populated and has few main arteries bisecting it, many drivers use narrow, residential streets as cut-throughs -- a bad combination when it comes to accidents. In your opinion, what is the most challenging intersection in South Orange? What do you think is the most dangerous intersection in town? Let us know what you think by taking our poll below and telling us in comments. Did we leave out a corner you think is the most treacherous?
