Police say burglar stole jewelry and electronics before fleeing.
A burglar stole a Kindle, a camera and a jewelry box from a home on Varsity Road Tuesday after breaking in by pushing in a ground floor air conditioner, according to South Orange Police. The burglar climbed through the window after pushing in the air conditioner and ransacked a second-floor bedroom shortly after 1 p.m., police said. After officers arrived on the scene, the burglar fled through the back door and over a rear fence into Newark, police said. The Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.

Police warn of recent rise in burglaries and thefts from cars.
The South Orange Police Department has issued a crime alert warning residents about a recent increase in burglaries and thefts from cars. According to the police, these types of crime rise in warm weather. Most of the incidents are taking place overnight, say police, and some of the suspects are believed to be using bicycles as a mode of transportation. Driver faces DWI charge after striking cement island on South Orange Avenue near Church Street on Jan. 31.
South Orange police arrested a 42-year-old Livingston man on Jan. 31 after officers saw his car strike a cement island on South Orange Avenue near Church Street, officials said. Brian Gordon was driving along the roadway at 3 a.m. when officers saw the incident and stopped the car. Following an investigation, police arrested Gordon and charged him with driving under the influence. He was taken to police headquarters and processed, police said. No further information was released.

The 2011 Uniform Crime Report showed a decrease of approximately 52 criminal incidents in South Orange
Reported South Orange crime dropped from 472 in 2010 to 420 in 2011. The New Jersey State Police released its 2011 Uniform Crime Report on Friday with statewide criminal reports rising 3-percent from 2010 to 2011. According to the report, South Orange saw a reduction of 52 incidents last year from the previous year. With 16,198 residents and approximately 56 officers in its police force, South Orange had 59 violent crimes which were split between 11 aggravated assaults, and 48 robberies. The majority of its reported incidents were of a non-violent nature (361) as the village had 237 reported thefts last year. Also reported were 68 burglaries, and 56 stolen vehicles. Three Seton Hall students were arrested for removing a stop sign
Three Seton Hall University students were arrested for dragging away a portable sign used in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. Elizabeth Lucas, 20, Steven Bauernfeind, 20, and Tyler Robert, 20, were arrested on Nov. 10 at 1:20 a.m., according to South Orange police. The three students were seen removing a portable stop sign at the intersection of Ward Place and Irvington Ave. The sign was standing in for a traffic light, which wasn't in operation due to power failures in the area.

Two Seton Hall University students were arrested
South Orange police confiscated 45 bags of marijuana, related drug paraphernalia, and a pair of brass knuckles from a Seton Hall dorm room on Wednesday night. Police arrested Russell Bailey, 20, and Darrell Barnes, 19, both Seton Hall students. South Orange police arrested the two men after Seton Hall security asked them to intervene. Security officers entered Bailey's dorm room to follow up on reports a strong marijuana smell. Security officers discovered what police called a "large quantity" of marijuana and called the authorities. University officials did not comment on which dorm Bailey lives in or what possible consequences the two men face if convicted. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
The "Woodside" sign is the latest threatened sign
South Orange has seen three signs taken and one damaged in recent weeks. The bronze "Woodside" sign from Forest Road is the latest missing sign. Police report the Woodside sign, a bronze plaque attached to a large stone at the intersection of Forest Road and Wyoming Avenue, was stolen sometime before Sept. 21, when a resident noticed it missing. The origin of the plaque is unknown. Earlier in September, two men were seen removing the street sign that marked Centre Street and South Orange Avenue. On Sept. 7, at 1:30 a.m., a resident called police to report the men left the area in a Nissan Altima. Just in time for the new school year, South Orange police remind drivers of the laws about school buses. 1) It is very important to pay attention and follow all traffic rules when driving around school buses. All school buses have flashing lights and a stop arm to alert you when to stop. 2) Yellow lights will begin to flash to warn drivers that a bus is approaching a stop. This is your signal to slow down and prepare to stop. 3) If you are approaching a school bus from either direction with flashing red lights, you must stop at least 25 feet away from the bus. Thief pushed in window air conditioner, stole flat-screen TV, computer and jewelry.
For the second time this month, an intruder pushed a window air conditioner into a South Orange home and ransacked the house, South Orange Police said. In the latest incident, a Finlay Place resident told police an air conditioner was pushed through the window between 7 a.m. July 25 and 1:30 am July 27. A resident reported an incident to the South Orange Police Department.
A Ward Place resident told South Orange police on Tuesday night garbage was strewn on his yard, the house was targeted by eggs and someone left a "For Sale" sign on the yard. While there was no damage to the house, the criminal mischief took place while the resident was home, between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. "This is unusual for summer," said neighbor Katy Connolly. "I associate this behavior, especially the eggs with Mischief Night and Halloween."
