Thanks for attending Trustee Davis Ford; along with Trustee Rosner, Levison and Village Pres Torpey the sense of "unified community" was unmistakable to me. Some of the side pix are wonderful too - especially the voter registration tables. Thanks for photos Mr. Westura. Thanks for post and story too.   more ›

JK Rowling's New Book Not Making Magic

Has the hype over the bestselling Harry Potter author run its course?

When J.K. Rowling last released a new book, locals counted down to midnight of the release date, waited in line for hours at Words to buy the book, and celebrated in costume with library events. This time? Nothing. J. K. Rowling's new book, The Casual Vacancy, will be released in a month - on Sept. 27. The book is intended for an adult audience, and is described in advance materials as "darkly comic."  Still, given the writer's loyal following, will local stores open at midnight? Are library reserve lists for the new book already into triple digits? No. The South Orange Public Library ordered the book, but has only one name on the wait list, according to librarian Nancy Janow. "This is not at all like last time," she said.   Then, besides …

The anticipation isn't as high simply because by the time the 3rd HP book or so was published, the fanbase really kicked up a lot of notches. HP already had a fanbase, whereas while a lot of fans anticipate her new book, filling the exceptionally large shoes of HP is an almost impossible task. Personally, I have already pre-ordered my copy from Amazon, but I understand that it may not be anywhere…   more ›

Photo: Kiwanis Supports South Orange Children

The children's room gets a facelift, thanks to the Kiwanis Club

The South Orange Public Library children's room has been rearranged and updated. Thanks to a gift from the South Orange - Maplewood Kiwanis Club, the library has a new table, computer, and other supplies that help make the room more efficient during this busy summer reading season and to prepare it for back-to-school homework help. The room was closed for a day so teenage pages could rearrange furniture and get the space ready for kids of all ages.

T-Rex Storms South Orange Library

Passersby Gape in Surprise as a dinosaur takes over the library courtyard

The quiet of the summer afternoon was shattered. Children’s shrieks rent the silence as the mighty T-Rex lumbered towards Scotland Road. The dinosaur paused, turned and swung its weighty tail into the excited crowd.  It climbed onto a metal table and clambered down, bellowing loudly. (Click the attached videos to hear it.) At last, it lowered its head at the keeper’s command, and allowed even the youngest of South Orange’s avid readers to stroke its scaly head. This was the long-awaited kick-off of South Orange Public Library’s popular summer reading program.  This year’s theme, “Dream Big” launched dramatically, with a visit from Big Jeff, the Dinosaur Troubadour, and a life-sized animatronic dinosaur, courtesy of Field Station: Dinosaurs…

Library To Begin Offering Books On e-Readers

Borrowing books from the South Orange Public Library has just become electronic.

On Monday, the South Orange Public Library held its final seminar on how to use an e-reader, specifically for the purpose of borrowing books. For residents in attendence who own a Kindle, Nook, or one of the many technologies out there, it was an opportunity to expand their use of the library.  While the library will continue to serve as a community location, a place to come together and connect, several attendees at the seminar expressed delight at the newfound ability to borrow library books without the hassle of having to carry them around or remembering to return them on time. The program is run through the website, elibrarynj.com, a consortium of more than 50 New Jersey libraries. The different locations have essentially pooled their …
