State Budget: Fed on Hook for Sandy Recovery

The governor's proposed budget includes about $40 million in Sandy-related supplemental aid.

New Jersey’s recovery following Hurricane Sandy will come, officials and legislators at Tuesday’s budget introduction at the Statehouse in Trenton said, but just don’t expect the State to pay for it. Among Gov. Chris Christie’s proposed $32.9 billion budget, only about $40 million has been set aside for Sandy-related recovery, all of it coming in the form of supplemental aid. Its intended use will only be as a stopgap during the process of the state’s securing aid for various recovery efforts. The negligible sum will have little impact on the state’s budget, according to New Jersey Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff. NJ Senate Committee Hears Budget Concerns

School advocates say state budget underfunds public schools at state Legislative hearing.

Over 50 people gathered on Tuesday in the conference center of University Hall at Montclair State University for the first public hearing of the New Jersey State Senate Budget Committee. Many of the speakers, given four minutes each for their testimony, were advocating for increased funding for public education at Tuesday’s meeting. “The state wants to punish these kids, another generation of kids, by giving the district less money to do more with,” said Rosie Grant, program director of the Paterson Education Fund.  “How do we do that with increasing enrollment and decreased funding?
