The Week Ahead in South Orange
Testing dominates the school week as sixth graders take the NJASK, seventh and eighth graders make up any they missed, and high school students take the AP. Specific details are here. The week ahead in South Orange
Tuesday will see a debate among the candidates for Village Trustee. The Board of Trustees Candidates' Debate is Tuesday, April 30, 7:30-9:00 p.m, SO Middle School. Sponsored by the Maplewood/South Orange League of Women Voters, the debate will provide an opportunity for the candidates to present their positions on issues of importance to South Orange residents. Attendees will be invited to submit their own questions for the candidates as well. South Orange elections are non-partisan, and there are no official "tickets" on the ballot. Seven candidates will be competing for three open Trustee seats in the election, which is scheduled for May 14. The Board of Trustees meets Monday, 8 p.m. On the agenda: discussions of the South Orange Ave and Church Street site; Villager of the Month; CCR presents The Board of Education meets Monday, 7:30. On the agenda: the Montrose building; summer school; policies on outside staff activities and inappropriate staff and teacher conduct. This week is Shakespeare Week at CHS. The week ahead in South Orange
School recess is over and the push towards the end of the year is on. The third marking period ends Friday. CHS in Action is Wednesday, offering the public a look at school doings. The week that follows is the annual Shakespeare Festival. Students and CHS adults are invited and encouraged to wear costumes -- story to come! -- so get ready now. In South Orange, Patch will look at vacant lots and buildings, with a new Visions for Vacancy. Remember to get pool passes soon; the weekend's weather is a reminder that summer is coming.

South Orange looks ahead to the week
School is closed this week, making it a quiet week for district events and meetings. The following week will see activity as students prepare for Wednesday, April 17, School in Action Night. The week after is Shakes-Spirit-Week and the CHS Shakespeare festival. The Board of Trustees meets Monday, at 7:30 pm for both a special meeting and a conference agenda. South Orange's Week Ahead
District students are counting down to spring recess. Students have days off from April 8 - April 12. That makes both this week and next quiet weeks when it comes to school meetings. However, mark those calendars! April 17 is CHS in Action Night, always a fun event. The Citizens Public Safety Committee meets Tuesday, 7:30 - 9, at Village Hall. Other events are listed here. The weather is changing, ever so slowly but surely. It's time to get pool passes at the early bird price. The pool opens Memorial Day and Stony's will be there.

The Week Ahead in South Orange
Passover has begun and Easter is next Sunday. For many people, and for SOMA schoolkids, Friday is a holiday. The new commuter train schedule is in effect: NJ Transit announces trip-time reductions for four Midtown direct trains to South Orange The Board of Trustees meets Thursday. The Week Ahead in South Orange
South Orange's week begins with a Board of Trustees meeting on Monday. The agenda is here. The Board of Education will present their budget to the public. Village President Alex Torpey will present a State of the Village address on March 18 at 8 p.m. at Village Hall. It will be televised, as well as being open to the public. South Orange's Week Ahead
On Monday night, the South Orange - Maplewood Board of Education will hold a special meeting to vote on the district budget for 2013-14. More budget information can be found on the district's website. Briefly, the proposed budget cuts 14 full time positions and slashing the technology "wish list" to plug an estimated $2.8 million gap in the 2013-14 budget year. (The personnel cuts include 19 positions eliminated and five added.) The proposal would add $475,000 of the district's banked cap -- saved from other years when the board has not used it -- to the operating budget. The resulting tax impact, including debt service, would be 2.93% -- or an additional $181 for the average Maplewood household and $191 for South Orange residents (using …
