Last Chance: Help Bring 'Kite Runner' Author to Words Bookstore

Words is one of five finalists in national contest to win visit from Khaled Hosseini. Vote by end of day Wednesday.

  Maplewood's Words Bookstore is one of five finalists in a nationwide window display competition to win a visit by Khaled Hosseini, acclaimed author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.  Voting is open to the public; information on how to vote is at the end of this article. The store was selected by Penguin Publishers in New York City as one of the top five bookstores in the country for their window display featuring Hosseini's works. The display, a full store window of mountain themed drawings and a sculptural installation, was designed by Words artist in residence, Meghan Keane. Legendary basketball player (and author) appeared in Maplewood.

  Knicks legend, four-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Famer Earl Monroe -- aka "Earl the Pearl" -- appeared at Words Bookstore in Maplewood on Saturday, April 27. Monroe read from and signed his new book, "Earl the Pearl."

Maplewood Celebrates World Book Night on April 23

Words Bookstore and Maplewood Memorial Library will host events.

  World Book Night is an annual, global campaign to give away thousands of free books to encourage non-readers to read. Held this year on April 23, the event will mobilize 25,000 volunteers in more than 6,000 towns and cities nationwide to distribute half a million free books. Volunteer book lovers help promote reading by going out into their communities and sharing free copies of books they love. The mission of World Book Night is to seek out those without the means or access to printed books. In Maplewood, registered volunteers from the Words Bookstore community will be distributing books in such diverse locations as VA hospitals, roller skating rinks, mass transit, nursing homes, schools, and food pantries.   "We are proud to be a …

Jane Aronson To Speak on School Issues for Adopted Kids

Adoption specialist is guest speaker at Adoptive Parents Committee meeting Sunday at Words Bookstore.

  Adoption expert and Maplewood resident Dr. Jane Aronson will be addressing specific issues and concerns that adopted children face in school at Words Bookstore on Sunday, March 10 at 6 p.m. The event is part of a special meeting of the Adoptive Parents Committee New Jersey Chapter. APC is a 50-year-old organization with chapters in NY, NJ and CT.  According to Aronson, adopted children often feel overwhelmed and have learning challenges. UPDATE: Tuscan Teacher Leads Sandy Book Drive

Donations will help schools rebuild libraries destroyed in the hurricane.

  Claire Sinclair updates Patch readers via email on the book drive: Tuscan collected over 3,500 books. Seth Boyden dropped off many boxes and bags as well...I'd estimate at least 500. Lois and Andrea of Bookbgone came by and picked up the books and brought them to their facility in Union. They were immediately transferred to be delivered to Belmar, NJ where they will be distributed to the public library as well as the Belmar Elementary school.   There were so many volunteers, but the stand out ones...are, Juli and Phil Lipoff, Dave Sinclair, Chris Costanza and Melissa Sheehy.
