Prosecutor's Office Appoints First African-American Woman to Key Post

Quovella Spruill named deputy chief of county law enforcement agency

For years, when the management of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has had a question or a problem to be resolved, the first response has often been simply to “Ask Q.” “If you want something done, ask Q, and she can do it,” said Acting Prosecutor Carolyn Murray. Quovella M. Spruill -- or “Q,” as she’s known around the Leroy Smith Public Safety Building in Newark -- on Friday officially became the first African-American woman to be named deputy chief of the county law enforcement agency, where she will help oversee a staff of 120 investigators and other personnel. During a swearing-in ceremony Friday, colleagues praised Spruill, who had served as acting deputy since May, for her tremendous work ethic and mastery of the details of law …

Newark Man Guilty of Animal Cruelty after Kicking Dog in Eye

Dog forced to have eye removed as a result

A Newark man has pleaded guilty to one count of third degree animal cruelty after he kicked a small dog in the face, causing its eye to pop out. Oswald Hall, 61, kicked his girlfriend's sister's dog Zoey, a Chihuahua, in the head on New Year's Day this year while wearing boots, said Assistant Prosecutor Dawn D'Amico, who handled the case. The dog's eyeball popped out as a result of the kick and had to be removed. Both the sister and the girlfriend were living with Hall at the time of the incident. Hall also pleaded guilty to animal cruelty for striking his girlfriend's dog in the head on Sept. 22, 2011, causing the animal head trauma. Both incidents of animal cruelty involved different dogs, according to Katherine Carter, spokesperson for …

Action by Quick-Thinking Carjacking Victim Leads to Arrest

Woman rams sheriff deputy's car to alert him to crime.

An alert 21-year-old woman thought fast when her car was carjacked Saturday around 2 p.m. in South Orange and she was forced by the carjacker to drive to Newark. While driving through Newark, the woman saw an Essex County sheriff’s vehicle and got a sheriff’s officer’s attention – by ramming the vehicle with her car, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and South Orange Police Chief James Chelel.  Following the crash, the suspect ran from the carjacked car and the officer pursued him through Vailsburg Park before losing sight of him.  The county Homicide Task Force and South Orange police continued investigating the incident and within four hours arrested Isaiah Green, 22 of Newark.  Green has been charged with robbery, …
