Novelist Philip Roth receives key to the city
Novelist Philip Roth, a Weequahic native whose novels were often set or centered in the neighborhood when it was a Jewish enclave decades ago, received the key to the city March 27 during a ceremony at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Nj.com reported. “I have one question. Where is the lock? Where do I put it?” said Roth, who turned 80 March 19. His birthday was celebrated here with a party at the Newark Museum and the debut of a photo exhibit of his life at the main branch of the Newark Public Library on Washington Street. About 280 people, including Mayor Cory Booker and former Gov. Brendan Byrne, attended the event.

Patch editors score tickets to live taping of 'America's Got Talent' at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark – and they liked what they saw
Even despite my inherent love as a reporter for the occasional happy, heart-wrenching human-interest story, I was skeptical of what I was about to sit through Tuesday night during a live taping of "America's Got Talent." A miniature mariachi singer belting out a love ballad? Muscular men clogging in tight jeans in front of a massive American flag? Tiny dancers cartwheeling in nauseating succession? For two full hours? This was not the Newark I knew. This was some alternate universe. Since early July, NBC's ratings-topping "America's Got Talent" has been filming twice a week at NJPAC, drawing hundreds of out-of-towners to Brick City for the feel-good, all-American show that you can't help but fall in love with. I did. After snagging two VIP…

Longtime event at NJPAC offers cultural items, sense of community
For as much as this past weekend's event in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center lobby was branded as the Kwanzaa Artisan Festival, Lorna Johnson looked around and saw so much more. "I think there's very spaces in the Newark metropolitan area … that are what I call a village," said Johnson, a festival vendor and Newark resident. "This is definitely an urban village." Several vendors set up shop in this village Friday through Sunday, selling primarily – but not exclusively – African-themed artwork, clothing and jewelry. More than simply providing pre-holiday shopping, though, the weekend provided a cultural exchange including Saturday's free children's festival for several hundred kids. Kwanzaa, the weeklong holiday celebrating African-…
