On the article Letter to the Editor: No Butts About It, Something Should Be Done About Cigarette Disposal

ReplyHello Sheila,
We appreciate you bringing to our attention this aspect of our smoke-free initiative, one which we have given close consideration. We apologize for the unsightly result and thank you for helping us transition toward our smoke-free and healthier environment, on our campus and around it.
When we made the decision to make Morristown Memorial Hospital a smoke-free campus in 2009, we did so understanding it would be an ongoing effort. We’ve had some successes worth mentioning. Many of our employees have stopped smoking, thanks to our smoking cessation programs. We’ve encouraged a healthier lifestyle for our patients and visitors and have gotten positive feedback from visitors who say they feel empowered to kick the habit for good.
The effort is not without challenges. For those who still choose to smoke, we realize that not everyone takes responsibility for policing themselves and properly disposing of smoking litter. We have asked that our facilities staff schedule extra trips to empty trash receptacles on Franklin Street. We have also communicated with our managers and other staff to remind them that when they are on the job, they are also Morristown community members and are responsible for being good neighbors.
We’re constantly trying new and innovative ways to get the smoke-free and personal responsibility messages across. We ask for your patience as we work to meet those goals, so that we can all breathe a little easier. -
On the article Council Says Helipads Never Accessory Use

Atlantic Health System
4:03 pm on Wednesday, August 11, 2010
There is no truth to this rumor. There was never a plan for transplantation at Overlook Hospital. As has been repeatedly stated in public forums, the helipad was proposed for inter-hospital transport for neuroscience patients who need highly advanced care. There would be between five to nine flights, monthly, providing life-saving treatment for those in our region needing specialized medicine. Overlook is neither a trauma center nor a transplant center, nor has plans to become one.

ReplyAtlantic Health welcomes the opportunity to educate the public about our proposal to build a helipad at Overlook Hospital, including the life-saving benefit and minimal local impact that the project would have. It is unfortunate, however, that certain individuals continue to reinforce lingering misconceptions and stoke undue fear about the project. We invite members of the public to find accurate information about this initiative at our web site. Please visit atlantichealth.org and type in keywords “neuro critical care” in the search box, or copy and paste the web address below into your web browser. There you will find facts, frequently asked questions and a copy of our letter to the community.
