I live in the Tuxedo Park neighborhood of South Orange, and was impressed by the resourcefulness, and generosity of those in our little enclave, as we tried to help each other after the storm had passed westward. There were many orange extension cords stretched between houses with, and houses without generators. One of our neighbors, who kept both heat and electricity during the storm, invited those of us who needed it, to visit with them, and to recharge cell phones and use the internet.
On the other hand, here is exactly what our immediate neighbor to the west, Seton Hall University, did, in terms of community support and outreach, in the immediate aftermath of the storm:

My neighborhood seems always to be one of the very last to have power restored, when events such as Sandy, and last year's October ice storm, cut off our electricity. We have been without power, on average, several times over the past ten years. While I know someone must always be last in line, I still find it frustrating that, even though a fourth grader with only average intelligence could predict what will happen, the repair crews will put the reattached wires right back up, in exactly the same places they were before -- because, surely, there will never be another punishing ice storm, nor any reason for another massive tree branch ever to fall again in South Orange, right?

Why, oh why, oh why, oh why do we continually face these predictable, expensive problems (winter coming, as it does, every year), when an investment in time and labor could, by burying power lines, obviate the problem almost completely? It will never be less expensive to make these repairs than in the present. But no.....

  • On the article Poll: Romney Picks Paul Ryan as Running Mate—Your Thoughts?

Of course it's all speculative, based only on what I've seen in the media, but judging by Mr. Ryan's budget, I'd say he has all the compassion of an underfed crocodile, and a complete contempt for and disregard of the lives of those millions of Americans who must make their way in life without the considerable advantages Mr. Ryan has enjoyed. In which case, he is a perfect fit for Gov. Romney's ticket, and a terrible, terrible idea as a possible American President.

I'm very grateful to read this unsettling article, and will use the information as I contact my Assembly Members. Because I live in the neighboring Tuxedo Park area of South Orange, I already know of the University's interest in spreading itself out into nearby portions of the South Orange community, without regard for possible impact on property values, or on the lives of neighborhood residents. How would you like an ROTC office next door to your house? And as the article points out, there's not even a discernible tax advantage, to be used as a thin excuse for permitting such invasive maneuvers on the part of the University. Thanks again, to the author. Now I've got some phone calls to make...

What a shock. This is like the steel mills in Pittsburgh shutting down. Or Kodak going broke in Rochester. There's no way to foresee it, for the average person. Forgive my cynicism, but for corporations, people only matter until it's too expensive for people to matter. How this closing will increase tax revenue seems a mystery.

What a shame for a Republican governor to face the same lack of cooperation, at the state level, that the Democratic President faces from a Republican Congress. And as for 'unfairly targeting' wealthy New Jersey residents, I think they can afford a little targeting, if it helps with Christie's budgetary problems. But better to tax the poor, right?
