New Town Hall Deli to Open Monday

Locals—mourning the loss of the Sloppy Joe—eagerly await the opening.

The brand-new Town Hall Deli—birthplace of New Jersey's famous Sloppy Joe sandwiches—will open Monday in its new space on 1st Street in South Orange.

The beloved deli has been closed since March when it left its former location at 60 Valley Street, just around the corner from the new site. (That site is now a 7- Eleven, which is also set to open soon.)

Owner Tony Wonski is currently hiring, according to the deli's Facebook page. Lisa Hackett, executive director of the South Orange Village Center Alliance (SOVCA), told Patch the deli would begin taking orders on Friday and would have a soft opening Monday.

A visit to the deli Thursday morning found workers readying the store for the opening.

Wonski announced last August the 85-year-old deli would shutter its Valley Street location.

Town Hall Deli, 74 1st Street, South Orange, (973) 762-4900.
